16 pages

Who They’re For: Beginning Language Students & Developing Readers Continuing to “Study” Initial Consonant Sounds & Spellings.

Why You Need Them: Learning basic phonics patterns is more fun—and probably more effective—with illustrated game materials. This 72-item deck “teaches” the most regular correlations between 18 initial consonant sounds and their spellings. It continues to build everyday vocabulary.

What You’ll Do:

[1] From the 72 Beginning Initial Consonants Cards file, download all 16 pages. On card stock or stiff paper, print them out back-to-back, to flip on their long edge. (Or for a one-sided card deck, print out only the even-numbered pages.)

[2] Cut apart the 9 cards on each of the 8 pages; they should all be the same size and shape. Note that there are four 18-item “suits of cards” in these meaning categories: 1. Person or Animal, 2. Place, 3. Thing, and 4. Action or Activity. These can be alphabetized according to the first letter or digraph in each word.

[3] If helpful, get tips from the 72-page Initial Consonants: Basic & Beginning Activity & Idea Book. After explaining the pronunciation and spelling of initial consonants, whole words, and the content of 2 Initial Consonants Card Packs, the book offers over 20 versatile ways to optimize use of these or comparable materials. Try (some of) them. Come up with even more effective procedures.

[4] If this card pack seems too difficult, go back to the content of 54 Basic Initial Consonants Cards. For more challenge, go on to 160– and/or 244– Intermediate & Advanced Initial Consonant Card Packs.
