Who They’re For: English Speakers & Readers Reviewing Phonics & Spelling at Advanced Levels—Who Want to “Know All” About Consonant Sounds/Spellings

Why You Need Them: Even the many alternative and exceptional spellings of initial consonant sounds can be taught/learned with motivating game materials. This 248-item pack contains it all: every possible consonant spelling that can begin a word, the sound(s) it stands for, its category and an illustration of its meaning.

What You’ll Do:

[1] From the 248 Advanced Initial Consonants Cards file, download all 56 pages. On card stock or paper, print them out back-to-back. Cut apart the 9 cards per page: they should all be the same size and shape. Note that there are four 62-item “suits of cards” (general classifications of meaning): [1] Person/Animal, [2] Place, [3] Thing, [4] Verb. The most unusual sound-letter correlations are in shaded, starred * boxes. Because of “silent letters” and spelling oddities, the 62 words in each sequence can be put into approximate alphabetical order only. Card backs remind users of the content of the pack. There are 3 cards with informational summaries.

[2] If materials are used mostly for their pedagogy, now is the time to refer to and apply the relevant details in the accompanying 76-page Initial Consonants: Intermediate & Advanced Activity & Idea Book. Refer to its explanations, charts, lists, and directives as needed. Try out (some of) them. Come up with even more engaging or effective procedures.
