Who It’s For: Intermediate-Level English Learners & New Readers Ready to Distinguish Vowel + Final Consonant Rime Sounds from Letters that Spell Them

Why You Need It: When learning phonics beyond basic levels, it helps students to see, hear the pronunciation of, and handle targeted language material. The motivation of card-playing remains: the challenge of matching vocabulary items with different spellings makes it even more enticing.

What You’ll Do:

[1] To make the 52 Intermediate Rhyming-Word Cards in Deck E, print out all 12 pages back-to-back, flipped horizontally. Cut them apart so they’re all the same size and shape. Note that they can be divided into 13 separate sets of 4 items each that contain the same vowel + consonant rime: these are listed in phonetic symbols on each card back and also appear in colored boxes under each card-face picture. Two extra cards give useful info.

[2] Use cards to review the concept that words spelled the same after their initial consonants usually rhyme. Then introduce the idea that rhyming words can have different spellings, especially in their (complex) vowel sounds or added endings.

[3] Try some cooperative or competitive learning activities suggested in the 56-page Rhyming Words: 4 Intermediate Card Decks E-H Activity & Idea Book. Continue with procedures of your own creation.

[4] In other lessons targeting the pronunciation and spelling of one-syllable rimes, use the cards as “triggers” or reminders of “key words.”
