Who It’s For: American-English (Teachers & Helpers of) New Language Learners Starting to Build Confidence with Lessons Focused on Oral-Language-Skills

Why It’s Useful: Learners still new to instruction in Oral Language Skills need to relax during practice sessions. For this reason, Parts One, Two, & Three of the second Chapter of WorkLife English Skills Book 1 replicate the instructional activity formats of the previous Download.  Again, this excerpt begins with a Strip Story to listen to, read along with, and use as modeling.  Part One provides Vocabulary to link with visuals and directive sentences.  Part Two / Listening has text users match four Audio Conversations with drawings of relevant situations.  They then listen carefully for the numbers and place names they need to fill into addresses.  Part Three / Grammar in Conversation has learners reinforce their grasp of grammatical patterns and vocabulary by making oral substitutions in short dialogs.  As always in Parts & Pieces downloaded from WorkLife English Skills Book 1, Part Four: Reading & Writing is not included.

What You’ll Do:

[1] On page 17, follow along in the text as participants hear the dialog in “Please Tell Me Your Name & Address.” As usual, the illustrated “story” can be used repeatedly for various purposes: to model sentence structure (in this case, Imperative Directives), to introduce vocabulary, to assess and improve articulation.  The Part One / Vocabulary exercises on pages 18-21 include items that are full sentences, numbers, and parts of street addresses.

[2]  The Part Two / Listening tasks (on pages 22-23) have text users “get the general idea” of very brief exchanges by relating them to visual cues.  Then then listen for the details they need to complete a Class Card, an Address Book entry, and an Address.

[3] With examples of names, components of addresses & telephone numbers, and other bits of “Contact Information,” Part Three / Grammar in Conversation again uses Substitution for reinforcement.

[4] Following the ten text pages are the “answers” learners need, contained in highlighted Tapescript portions.  Three pages of attached Pronunciation Worksheets invite participants to use numbers in a Dyad Info-Gap Activity.  Then if offers practice in the (complex-vowel) pronunciation of names and family relationships.
