Why It’s Useful: From the beginning of language instruction, modal-verb phrasing can be used to Ask Permission, Make Requests, Express Possibility or Probability, and/or Give Advice. In excerpts from two chapters of a “Cross-Cultural Communicative Grammar,” you/your learners can fulfill these functions in classroom and health-related settings.
What You’ll Do:
[1] Review uses of can/could, will/would in question patterns that request permission or help. Use cues to complete or create full sentences.
[2] Go over may/might/could/must statements that express future possibility or probability. Make your own predictions or guesses about waiting rooms, disease prevention, causes of death.
[3] Check out simple verb-phrase patterns with should/ought to/had better that give advice. Fill in words and make your own recommendations in regard to immunizations, dental or prenatal care, and general health.
