Who It’s For: (Self) Teachers & Helpers at Beginning Learning Levels

Why It’s Useful: To describe activities or events that were taking place in the Past-Time Frame, past-continuous verb phrasing is usually more appropriate than simple past. (This tense form may be called “The Past Progressive.”)  This compact lesson introduces its forms and patterns—followed by sentence-generating practice in context.

What You’ll Do:

[1] Make use of the page 148 Part Three: The Past Continuous: Statements, Questions, & Answers Conversation, “What were you doing at the time of the earthquake?” After commenting on its content (“memorable past moments”), on pages 149-150 use the Grammar-Pattern Boxes to identify the features of Affirmative & Negative Past Continuous sentences. Do the Practice Exercises *A-*C in between.

[2]  For **D, think about an emergency or short event that you remember experiencing in the past.  Tell what you were doing (and/or what else was going on) at the time. Listen to others’ memories of what was happening at critical instances in their pasts.
