Who It’s For: (Self) Teachers & Helpers at Advancing Learning Levels.   

Why It’s Useful: Here are two “discrete-point,“ separated (excerpted) lessons that can be used for review, reinforcement, or variety when strengthening English speakers’ abilities to converse about the past.  Their content / context is the legal system—more precisely, (everyday) laws that might surprise people. 

What You’ll Do: 

[1]  In Lesson 26 on page 57, review phrasing with used to / would for “Repeated Past Activity” that no longer exists. After working with the paragraph “Changes in Law Enforcement,” create comparable discourse on (un)related topics: legal, economic, societal, or other circumstances that used to function quite differently a short time or long now. 

[2] In Lesson 27 on pages 58-60, go over patterns and uses of the Past Continuous vs. the Simple Past (again).  In Exercise A (“Breaking the Law?”), fill in the correct verb forms.  In Exercise B, make up and tell past-time stories about the eight pictured situations.  Go “Beyond the Text” in Exercise *C to describe situations and/or narrate revealing tales about the past that illustrate how much the world has changed
