Why You Need It: At the heart of a course or unit on Biographies of Famous-Figures are the biographical readings themselves, probably with Exercises that promote comprehension / learning and Mastery Checks. At Low– to High-Beginning Learning-Proficiency Levels, here are 30 Selections, three-to-a-page, each with Vocabulary, Main-Point, & Important Supporting-Info Exercises on their reverse sides. There are two two-page “Mastery Quizzes” + Answer Keys.
What You’ll / They’ll Do:
[1] Excerpted from an earlier section, page 12 is titled “30 Beginning-Level Biographies 1-12 & 13-30 on text pages 15 to 24 & 25 to 38.” Read the page for Explanation of the formatting, principles, aims, and features of the Biographies, Comprehension Aids, & Quizzes that follow. It also suggests how to make good use of them.
[2] To introduce the subject matter of Basic-Beginning Biographies 1-12 to a group, on a board or screen you might print the names of their Famous Figures—Abraham, Adam & Eve, Albert Einstein, Ann Frank, Barack Obama, Harry Potter, Jesus Christ, Michael Jackson, Mickey Mouse, Mohammed, Mohammed Ali, Queen Elizabeth II. For “Pre-Reading Warm-Up,” participants can tell what they already know about one or more of them; alternatively, in random order you can make main-idea statements about them for listeners to react to. (Example: “He’s a world-famous Disney cartoon character.” Answer: “Mickey Mouse.”)
[3] If you print out pages 15 through 21 back to back (on stiff paper, preferably in color), you will have four two-sided pages that can be cut horizontally into thirds. The result will be a 12-Selection “Reading Kit” of Biographies 1-12 to use in a variety of (suggested) engaging, motivating ways—with / without the corresponding Learning Aids on the reverse side; as a whole-class oral lesson, a silent reading activity, an “Expert Game,” or something else. After participants have had a chance to understand the material, they can complete the pages 37-38 Mastery Test on screen or paper—cooperatively, independently, or competitively. Answers are on page 39.
[4] The same, equivalent, or different procedures (from those of Steps [1] & [2]) can be applied to High-Beginning Biographies 13-30 on pages 25-36, 37-39. Answers are on page 40.
