Who They're For:

  • Secondary students, young adults, and adults.
  • Independent learners and home school students.
  • Instructors and tutors working with Grades 3-8.
  • Ideal for English improvement, ESL, EFL, Literacy, WIOA, Career and College, and Corrections Institutions.
  • Perfect for new readers and beginning through intermediate language learners.

What They Are:

Beginning Homophone Decks 1-6 contain 54 pairs of matching homophones (words with the same pronunciation but different spellings and meanings) that are very common in everyday speech and writing. Examples are ate/eight, be/bee, are/"R", r, hear/here, there's/theirs, one/won, too/two, and the like. These are listed in the accompanying Book, and there are ten reproducible quizzes testing mastery of the items.

Why You Need Them

Although basic learners and very new readers may not have enough vocabulary to be confused by homophones, high-beginning language students and developing readers will soon encounter them. In fact, homophones may be fun to "study" because they're a "curiosity." Paying attention to them early in the learning process will provide a natural introduction to some of the vagaries of English spelling and vocabulary.

What They Do:

serve as flash cards for the recognition and production of 108 common vocabulary words, all of which are homophones of one or two other items. Card users can view illustrations and examples of the items in context (with blanks) on card backs; later these become cues for recall.

provide ideas for activities and games that teach learners to distinguish between the words of each pair, to spell them aloud, and to use them in appropriate contexts that (again) illustrate their meanings

offer supplementary material in a 32-page Activities & Ideas Book, which

  • tells why homophones exist in English, giving charts of the spellings that produce them
  • explains how the cards work, suggesting other ways to use them efficiently and effectively.
  • gives other ways to teach and/or learn these interesting vocabulary pairs
  • offers reproducible Mastery Checks of two kinds, a fill-in and a matching test--with Answer Keys.
  • includes Reference Lists of all relevant items for all three levels of materials
