Who It’s For: (Teachers & Helpers of) Intermediate Language Learners

Why It’s Useful: Even when they understand English and can speak comprehensibly, some language learners may not fully grasp the concept of Third-Person Singular Verbs until later in the acquisition process. This segment not only reviews the forms in Simple-Present Statements, Questions, & (Short) Answers. It also provides vocabulary and information useful in Job Searches and other work-related Applications.

What You’ll Do:

[1] Beginning with the Captions and adding the sentences of the Speech/Thought Balloons when relevant, dramatize the Strip Story “Uncle Stephen Loses His Job” on page 58. Then go on to the pedagogy, visuals, exercises, and *Beyond the Book” activities on the following pages.

[2] Use every opportunity to discuss/incorporate not only the grammar of the language but also the meaning or relevance of its content to participants: getting/losing a job, getting fired, filing for benefits, living on savings, getting a pension, contacting a union, reading classified ads, sending out applications with resumes, interviewing, getting training, and whatever else comes up.
