Who It’s For: Intermediate-Level English Learners & New Readers Familiar with Regular Past Forms—Which May Rhyme with Other Words

Why You Need Them: Keep learning phonics patterns through play and playing to learn! This deck is especially useful when practicing words ending in –d.

What You’ll Do:

[1] To make the 52 Intermediate Rhyming-Word Cards in Deck G, print out the 12 pages back-to-back, flipped on the long edge. When cutting them apart, make them all the same size and shape. Check that they can be divided into 13 separate sets of 4 items each that match in their rime. Note the phonetic symbols on each card back and in colored boxes under each card-face picture. (Two extra cards give useful, additional information.)

[2] Use the cards to review the notion that rhyming words are usually spelled the same after their initial consonants. But then illustrate how words with different spellings can belong in a “Rhyming Word Family” as well—especially if they contain alternative vowel spellings and/or the grammatical past-tense ending –ed.

[3] In addition to trying (variants of) motivating games, include copies of reference lists in preparation, lesson, or follow-up activities. For variety, invent even better ones.

[4] In other lessons targeting the pronunciation and spelling of one-syllable rimes ending with –d, use the cards as “triggers” or reminders of “key words.”
