What It Is:

The WLE Level 3 Competency Based Grammar is a 180-page student text designed to improve competency in the use of sentence structure, phrasing, and grammar. Subtitled “An Immigration Story,” its ten (10) Chapter titles are:

  •   The Arrival    •  Housing    •   Transportation    •  Work      •  Education   •   Money        •  Recreation & Entertainment          •  Health & Illness           •   Friendship, Romance, & Love      • Family & Special Occasions

Why You Need It:

Hearing and reading others' everyday stories--as well as telling or writing about one's own experiences--is likely to involve most of the important sentence structures of the language. Cognitive youth and adults tend to understand and express themselves better when they're familiar with frequent grammatical patterns and "rules." And grammar acquisition proceeds better and faster in intriguing contexts they can relate to.

What It Does:

Designed and carefully written to flow seamlessly from Level 2, the grammar in this book also stands on its own. It coordinates with Level 3 Listening/Speaking and Reading/Writing, as well as with Levels 4 through 6 of WLE, to deliver a cohesive, consistent, reinforcing, and flexible program of English improvement.

Parts One, Two, and Three of each chapter begin with a strip story or captioned visual that models use of the important vocabulary and grammar of that section. These three parts present and practice the main structures used in personal communication about everyday events and situations. Verb forms and tenses in statements and questions are prominent. In later chapters, these are recycled and anchored as text users learn about less basic topics, such as adjectives, comparison, clauses and their connectors, indirect statements and questions, etc.

Part Four of each chapter reviews and summarizes. All parts contain a variety of exercises and activities, from controlled to open-ended.
