What You’ll Do:
[1] Paying attention to the use of modal verbs and the ironic humor, act out the page 213 dialog between a “psychiatrist” and his “patient.” Complete Comprehension Checks 17-A, B, C. Review the Grammar: “Modal Verbs in Sentences” on page 215.
[2] Noting the extra commentary offered in Sidebars, on pages 216-229, do Exercises 17-D through ***17-I at appropriate levels of challenge. Keeping relevant grammatical structures and content/context in mind, go beyond each section by adding ideas and language of your own.
[3] With the Summary Chart on pages 230-231, review and compare “Modal-Verb & Related Phrases Meanings & Patterns.” Show what you can do with modal-verb phrasing in culminating Activities **17-J to ***17-J. When applying the principles in this Chapter to your use of grammar beyond the text situations, enjoy the many ways that you can make requests or get permission; measure ability; tell desires & preferences; describe (im)possibility, expectation, obligation; and give advice.
