What It Is:

The WLE Level 2 Competency Based Grammar is a 170-page student text designed to improve learners' use of sentence structure, phrasing, and grammar. As in the corresponding Listening/Speaking and Reading/ Writing books about “English in Everyday Life,” its ten (10) Chapter titles are:

  •   Getting There   •  Problems & Solutions   •   Moving   •  Food & Things  •  The Family     •  The Community    •  Work    •  Shopping      •  Health      • The Weekend & Vacations

Why You Need It:

Few language learners are satisfied with primitive communication in single words or phrases. They want to put sentences together--and are even happier when these turn out not only "correct" but also effective in expressing what they want to say or write. That's what context-based grammar practice is all about--especially when its "contexts" are practical everyday situations.

What It Does:

Organized around grammar principles and patterns, the book provides vital competency material in its reading matter, exercises, and practical activities. In a grammar-based program, it provides the core material. In language-skills instruction, it can serve as a supplement for its corresponding reading/writing and listening/speaking texts.

Parts One, Two, and Three of each chapter begin with a strip story or conversation that introduces the important vocabulary and grammar of that section. These three parts present and practice structures essential to the language, mostly verb tenses for the Present, Past, and Future and other verb forms.

Part Four begins with specific grammar points on, for example, the use of pronouns (personal, reflexive); prepositions, kinds of nouns, adjectives, comparatives, and superlatives. It then summarizes, reviews, and reinforces the previous material of the chapter.
