Why You Need It: Perhaps—before or rather than applying principles of Games of Knowledge to your own (self-)teaching / learning situations, you’d like to try out Ready-Made Materials. Here’s the first third of Card Decks A-F available for the Subject Matter, the Science & Art of Agreeable Aging. Designed from Syllabi for Introductory Community-College Gerontology Courses, it consists of 54 x 2 (108) Questions, at three (3) Levels of Challenge each (True/False, Multiple-Choice, Short-Answer), for Topics that usually come first in courses of study: A. Definitions of Terms, and B. Myth Vs. Fact.
What You’ll / They’ll Do:
[1] In Download J-01.02a, notice the structure of all the Cards. Printed six (6) to a page, three (3) Cards in a row “cover” Learning Points for 3 separate Pieces of Information. For instance, for A. Definitions of Terms, the data are Answers to 1. “What are some myths about aging?” 2. “What is gerontology?” 3. “What’s a definition of ageism?” The same content (three “chunks of info”) appears in a different form on each Card—once as a statement to evaluate as True or False, second as a query with 3 possible responses to choose from, and third as a question to be answered with words, phrases, or sentences. The aim of this design is to support learners that benefit from repetition or reinforcement of content in different forms (with varied wording eliciting diverse responses). Correct Answers are on the reverse side of every one of the 54 Cards (in each Content Category A-F).
To get an overall idea of the content of 54-Card Deck A, scan through its 54 x 3 (162) Items & Answers. Notice that they link to important concepts integral to the subject matter, such as stereotypes, ageism, longevity, chronological vs. biological age, demography, social aging, life span (perspective), geriatrics, body (sub)parts, labels for impairments, elder abuse, etc.
To make hands-on use of the material, print out the 18 pages of J-01.02a back to back. Either apply them to Lessons & Quiz Games as is, or cut out the 54 separate Cards to use as a complete deck. Instructions for doing so are included in Downloads J-01.00, J-01.01, & J-01.Xtra—and/or you can probably invent even more effective, fun procedures of your own.
[2] For Download J-01.02b (Card Deck B. Myth Vs. Fact), pick out the directives from Step 1 above that are generic enough to apply to another collection of Learning Points relevant and useful to the overall Subject Matter: Agreeable Aging. Follow them as you continue your quest to acquire & communicate knowledge through games while enjoying yourselves.
