Who They’re For: (Teachers of) Learners Studying Medial Spellings in Polysyllabic Words—and Wondering about Silent Consonants
Why You Need Them: After becoming proficient in (vowel and) consonant sounds and spellings in one-syllable words, language students and new readers will begin noticing letter combinations in the middle of multi-syllabic items. Here’s more systematic presentation of phonics and spelling patterns in “advanced” vocabulary in compelling contexts: funny phrases, cartoon captions, category charts, a folk tale, and more.
What You’ll Do:
[1] In Lesson Eight of PESW (“Multi-syllable Words—Consonants”), review consonant sounds always spelled the same in the middle of words. Then cover sounds with various spellings by reading the “rules,” hearing typical vocabulary, filling in its letters, completing phrases and sentences with missing spellings, correcting errors, and matching items with their meanings. Learn about doubled consonants in medial position.
[2] In Lesson Eleven (“Silent Consonants”), hear words with consonants that are not pronounced in combination to other letters at the beginning, in the middle, and/or at the end of words. Do exercises and puzzles that compare words in which the same letter is pronounced or silent. Notice homophones.
[3] Use the appropriate sections of the attached Answer Key, which is from the PESW Instructor’s Guide, as an oral “Script” and/or to check learners’ responses.
