WorkLife English: a Competency-Based Reading / Writing Book 3: an Immigration Story, Chapter 1 / “The Arrival,” pages 6-17

Who It’s For: New Readers / Writers of Full Sentences in Paragraph or List Form.

Why You Need It: High beginners gaining ability in word or phrase reading / writing ought to start getting used to conventions of written discourse such as capitalization, punctuation, and arrangement of sentences in paragraphs and lists.  They should also attend to spelling rules like those for adding grammatical endings.

What You’ll / They’ll Do:

[1] In Part One / The Story, peruse “pre-reading” illustrations and vocabulary.  Read and understand the beginning of the narrative, “A Long, Hard Trip.” Then in pairs, choose one of two possible two endings to the story. Retell it to your partner.

[2] In Part Two / Practical Reading, read signs and understand forms (like a Customs Declaration) to fill out.

[3] In Part Three / the Rules of Writing, review what you know or learn what you need about writing conventions like capitalization (of names + the first word in a sentence) and (sentence end + internal) punctuation.  Review spellings of “Simple Vowel Sounds.” Go over (ir)regular noun plurals and regular past tense verbs. Write a paragraph from dictation.

[4]  In Part Four / Communicating in Writing, copy steps in instructions in  numbered lists.  Then write your own step-by-step directions for practical tasks you’re familiar with.
