WorkLife English: a Competency-Based Reading / Writing Book 2: English in Everyday Life, Chapter 6 / “The Community,” pages 76-89

14 pages

Who It’s For: New Readers / Writers of Information About Community Services Who Want to Recognize (Perhaps Outmoded) Ways of Doing Things

Why You Need It: Even with online banking / mailing and the like, old ways of serving communities remain in effect.  Understanding their purposes and procedures may help language learners to deal with or even to help design changes.

What You’ll / They’ll Do:

[1] In Part One / Read & Understand, look through generic info about kinds of community or government services. Demonstrate understanding of their functions.  Look up what’s available in your community.

[2] In Part Two / Information, note the features of (perhaps out-of-date) checking accounts, deposit slips, bank statements, and postal forms.  If they’re relevant to you, practice filling them or equivalent forms out.

[3] In Part Three / Spelling, go over (infrequent) spellings for some initial, medial, and final consonants.  Do exercises. Consider other vocabulary with these sounds.

[4]  In Part Four / Read & Write, work with (old-fashioned) checks and registers if that experience is helpful. Reconsider or strengthen your own ways of paying real bills.
