Why You Need It: No matter how proficient people are in English, the topic of money comes up in many areas of life, especially in regard to shopping, charge accounts (credit), bills, budgeting, and financial troubles.  Here’s reading & writing material relevant to those topics.  

What You’ll / They’ll Do:  

[1] The title of the Part One / The Story two-ending narrative is “Money, Money, Money.” It tells about immigrants encountering the consumer economy who have no immediate solutions to the problems it causes.  Read, understand, and relate.  Share your own experiences, ideas, and solutions.      

[2] In Part Two / Practical Reading & Writing, look closely at a simulated credit application, credit-card bill, and budget.  Compare them to your own (problematic) papers and (online) experiences.  

[3] In Part Three / the Rules of Writing, review word, sentence, and paragraph capitalization / punctuation.  Insert it into an instructive explanation.  Look over commentary on the spelling of the relatively uncommon consonant sounds / h w y w kw /—and of the –ing, -(e)r, and –(e)st endings.  Practice these in exercises, dictation, and your own writing about money issues. 

 In Part Four / Communicating in Writing, analyze the format and content of a typical printed bank letter.  With(out) a template, write your own consumer letter.
