Who It’s For: Acquirers of Comprehensible Accents—with Teachers & Helpers  Comprehending Speech More & More Easily & Speaking More & More Fluently— While Discussing Health & Medical Advice   

Why It’s Useful: First, you match illustrations to sentences about health practices and situations requiring First Aid.  Next comes group conversation in which friends try to give someone in pain contradictory advice.  Then you distinguish among Fricatives (“Continuant Consonant Sounds”) in sentences filled with Health & Illness Vocabulary.  After that, five pages of sequencing + fill-in exercises will teach or remind you what to do in medical emergencies—and urge you to look up and learn more about them.  Finally, communicate with others about how you’re feeling and what they should be doing to solve their health problems.  

What You’ll Do: 

[1] Reading the Competencies listings on the Chapter 9 Opener page will get you thinking about what you know or can do in regard to Medical Advice, First Aid Instructions, Prescriptions, Physical Feelings, Accurate Understanding.  Noting the Grammar will trigger a review (in your mind) of the Continuous Tenses.  Then two pages of Vocabulary are likely to remind you of your opinions on Health & Medicine.

[2]  Now that you’re experienced in Better Listening, in Part One you may enjoy the well-meaning advice of friends to a classmate who’s suffering—and even have your own opinion to add.  Since you know how to distinguish Consonant Sounds, in Part Two it might be fun to hear, repeat, and/or read aloud sentences with many instances of / s z sh ch j /.  When you utilize your Listening & Speaking Skills  In Part Three, you may enjoy reviewing what you know about a serious topic—steps to take in urgent medical situations—while you’re developing a facility for use of Contractions & Words in Fast Speech such as he’s, (h)is, (h)im, (th)em, and / or, and the like.  And finally, in Part Four it will be easy and pleasant to dialog about symptoms of medical  problems, health advice, and prescription instructions—especially if you use “Conversational Gambits” to insure effective Communication.
