Who It’s For: (Teachers of) High Beginning to Low Intermediate (Language) Learners & New Readers Assessing Ability to Read for Meaning, by Acquiring Vocabulary from Context and doing Basic Writing
Why You Need It: Beyond Beginning Levels, English-language learners / new readers might tend to focus on Vocabulary use in sentence-structure (grammatical) contexts. The ten Progress Tests related to material in WorkLife English: a Competency-Based Reading / Writing Book 3: An Immigration Story, Intro & Chapters 1-10 target just those skills. Test takers can use them as quick checks for acquisition of material in the student text—or they can go through them separately, as two-page “Worksheets” that assess and promote ability to apply context clues and cues.
What You’ll / They’ll Do:
[1] If it’s useful, peruse page 15 Instructions for WLE R/W 3 Progress Tests. Back-to-back), print out and/or display one or more of them. Notice also that the Instructions test-takers are to follow require progressively more ability to “figure out” meaning from context—and/or to complete or correct connected text from clues, logic, or (vocabulary / grammar) knowledge. Participants can complete their test(s) on their own, in pairs or groups, or as contributing members of a class—whenever they seem useful as a learning tool
[2] Make use of the pages 39-40 Answer Key for Progress Tests in ways that save time, contribute to (individualized or group) teaching / learning, and/or otherwise enhance educational processes.
